Love "Squared" for a Picnic Blanket!

I found many ways to sew in celebration of the arrival of our new grandson.
But our first "time pregnant" daughter
would only visit home once...
and it was early in her pregnancy.
Still, my SOFA parents were determined to
throw a book themed baby shower.
My goal was to create a way to permanently
share the love & celebration.

I decided to prepare 10" cotton quilt squares
and bibs prior to the shower-
and have decorating as the main shower activity.
I placed fabric markers of varied colors on tables throughout the party, to encourage color swapping.
I hoped quests would create something
special for her to remember them by.
They did not let us down!

 By Showers end...
we had a wonderfully collection of quilt squares and bibs decorated by guests in attendance
A special Thank you to our hosts:
Kristi, Heidi & Jamee!
Some of the bibs created...

I began to add 3" strip borders
on 2 sides of the quilt squares...
as I awaited a family visit to Florida
to create & collect further squares.
Squares & Binding were all created from
Kona Cotton & stitched on my Janome 9000

A few weeks after the shower,
I flew to visit Florida.
There, we decorated & held a full baby shower...
only thing missing was our Momma to be :(

Cousin Alyssa, Great Aunt Jamie, Cousin Kimberly,
Grand Bubbe Sheila, Great Aunt Samantha, & Cousin Brandon
Eventually, I had collected enough squares to piece them together and create a quilt topper!
I decided to back it with a tablecloth-
so it would have some water resistance
and could be used as a picnic blanket!
I kept stitching to a minimum,
since I knew it would be washed frequently
& was not meant to be heirloom.

I created the binding from my daughters
over-her-bed canopy- joining 2 1/2" strips
In the old days...
